Am I A Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an excellent alternative to shaving, waxing, and tweezing. It is semi-permanent because it kills the hair at the root, so it will not grow back. You can get laser hair removal on almost any bothersome area of the body. Once you complete your laser hair removal sessions, you can go to semi-annual maintenance treatments and not have to think about it again.
However, laser hair removal is not for everyone. How do you know if youre a good candidate for the procedure?

The best candidates are those with lighter skin and dark hair. This combination allows the laser light to be absorbed by the pigment in the hair as opposed to the pigment in the skin, making the treatment more effective. If your hair is very light, has little to no pigment, or is the same color as your skin, the treatment might not work as well for you.

Candidates with blonde, gray, or red hair probably wont see desired results from laser hair removal. That is because the hair lacks pigment, so there is nothing for the laser light to target. However, clients with darker skin should see their desired results as long as they consult with a skilled esthetician.

Women who are pregnant are not good candidates for laser hair removal because hormonal fluctuations might lead to some hyperpigmentation in the treatment area. While there is no set age limit for laser hair removal, the plastic surgeon or esthetician might set practice-specific age limits.

If you have a tendency toward developing keloids, laser hair removal treatments might not be appropriate for you; again, your esthetician will give you a personal recommendation during your consultation. If you have a tattoo or permanent make-up in the area you want to have hair removed, it might not be possible. Also, the procedure is not appropriate for the area just around the eyes.

If you are unsure if your skin or hair coloring makes you a good candidate, your esthetician will give you a consultation and let you know if the procedure is appropriate for you.
