Breast augmentation is simple a surgical procedure that generally involves placing a silicone or saline implant in the breast in order to give a fuller, more shapely appearance to the breasts. Its one of the most common plastic surgeries, and is useful for women who want to get back to their pre-baby body, women who want to fit better into their clothes, and those who simply want to feel better about their physical appearance.
Some of the most frequently asked questions concerning a breast augmentation are about the recovery. How long does it take to recover? What activities can you do? Is it uncomfortable? Well answer some of those questions here.
In the first two to four days after surgery, you might have some discomfort and swelling. Some patients also have bruising. Youll have a compression bra to wear during this time to help with the swelling and to ensure your implants dont shift inappropriately. Youll need help lifting anything (including children), and will generally want to take it easy during the first four days after surgery. Your doctor will give you a prescription for pain medication to help manage any discomfort you have after surgery.
Most patients can go back to work within one week to ten days of surgery (or more, if your job is very physically demanding). You might still have some slight swelling at this point, and youll notice that your implants will continue settling into the breast pocket over time. You can return to working out or other intense physical activity usually within four to six weeks. One thing to keep in mind is that patients who have their implants placed under the muscle of the chest will generally have a longer recovery time than those that have implants placed over the muscle.
During your recovery time, youll be given specific exercises and massages to perform on your breasts in order to help prevent capsular contracture (the hardening of the tissues around the breast) and to help the breasts settle into their permanent position. The massages usually start about one week post-op.
Youll also need to come into the office for a post-operative check up so your surgeon can make sure youre free of infection or other complications, and to make sure the implants havent shifted. During your post-op, your surgeon will give you any further necessary instructions for your recovery.
