Even though it is still chilly outside, it is technically spring! Winter is over and its time to think about helping your skin recover from the cold, dry weather. Winter weather can dry out your skin- not just because its so cold, but because we spend so much time inside in the dry central heating. This dryness doesnt just mean a tight feeling. It can result in flaking, itching, and redness.
There are a number of things you can do to help your skin recover and prepare it for the warmer spring weather.
The first step is to consult a licensed esthetician. They are professionals who can analyze your specific skin type and recommend the best recovery skin care products for you. This can be something as simple as a moisturizer, or perhaps a quick in-office procedure like a chemical peel to remove the layers of dry, damaged skin caused by winter weather.
While youre analyzing your skin care products, stop using harsh toners or alcohol-based products. These are just more drying for the skin and can lead to cracking or irritation.
The next step is to be sure you are using sunscreen. The sun will exacerbate any issues the winter weather is causing. Sun exposure leads to wrinkle formation and the loss of collagen and elastin, both of which will look more pronounced when you skin is already dry. Wear sunscreen even if you are only going outside for a minute- it only takes 60 seconds for the sun to start affecting your skin. Thats less time than it takes to walk to the mailbox and back for most people.
If you have very dry skin, try using a humidifier inside until the spring rains raise the moisture level of the air. Place them in the rooms you spend the most time in. They will help replace the moisture you are losing due to indoor heating.
Of course, youll want to continue drinking plenty of water if you havent been doing so over the winter. Keeping hydrated internally will help keep your skin hydrated.
