EltaMD UV Daily SunscreenThe sun causes many of the visible signs of aging on your face, hands, chest, and any other areas that get sun exposure. The UV radiation in the suns rays break down collagen and elastin, the proteins that give our skin firmness and elasticity, causing it to wrinkle and sag. The facial expressions made while squinting in the sun lead to wrinkles. Sun radiation also causes pigmentation issues like sun spots or age spots, and can give the skin a leathery texture.

We all know how important it is to wear sunscreen when youre in the sun in order to prevent skin cancer, sunburn, and signs of aging. But what about when its snowing, or cloudy, or raining? Is sunscreen necessary then? What if you spend most of your day inside? It is still necessary, and here are the reasons why-

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, up to 40% of the suns rays reach the earth even when there is cloud cover. You cant see the sun, but the sun is reaching you. Some of the worst sunburns can happen on cloudy days because people stay outdoors, thinking they are safe without sunscreen. The same rule applies if it is raining, snowing, or sleeting. The suns rays will still be reaching you, so its important to protect your skin.

If you stay inside, youll still be exposed to UV radiation through the windows of the building, or on your walk to and from your car. Windows filter out some UVB rays, but not UVA, so youre still exposed to dangerous radiation from the sun. UV radiation also penetrates clothing and smog caused by pollution, so there really is no circumstance under which you should skip your sunscreen.

The easiest way to stay protected is to use a daily moisturizer that contains an SPF already, so you dont have to add steps to your morning routine. When you wash your face in the morning, dry it gently and then apply your SPF moisturizer. Use a body lotion that contains SPF after your shower, as well, to make sure your entire body is covered. If you will be outside for long periods of time, apply a stronger sunscreen every two hours (or more, if youre in water).
