Undergoing breast augmentation is a major decision, one that requires careful planning and necessary recovery time. It is important to do as much as you can to get the best possible results from your breast implants, to avoid complications or a negative aesthetic result.
The first thing you can do to get the best results is to carefully select the correct size implant for your body, and have realistic expectations about the results of the surgery. For example, naturally thin women may have breasts that have a gap between them- implants will not correct that. If you select an implant that is too big in an attempt to move the breasts closer together, the result will be unnatural and could cause complications such as the double bubble effect.
Another way to get the best results from a breast augmentation is to consider getting a breast lift, as well. All breasts fall naturally over time due to gravity and the weight of the tissues, and the added weight of the implants may speed up that process. If your breast skin and tissues are already stretched or sagging because of pregnancy, weight loss, or gravity, adding breast implants may just make them look worse. Talk to your surgeon about whether or not a breast lift is appropriate for your situation.
Be sure to thoroughly discuss implant placement with your surgeon, as well. Whether you place the implant over the muscle, partially under the muscle, or totally under the chest muscle will have a lot to do with the resulting appearance and the likelihood of the implants bottoming out at some point. Under the muscle placement has less chance of bottoming out and can give a more natural appearance, but the recovery time is longer than over the muscle placement.
Another way to get the best results is to carefully follow your surgeons post-surgical instructions. Take any antibiotics you are given, which can help prevent infection. Capsular contracture, or a hardening and swelling of the breast around the implant, may be caused by bacterial contamination. Your surgeon may give you light exercises to do after surgery that can help prevent that.
Avoiding all the things youre told to avoid after surgery (strenuous exercises, lifting your arms above your head, etc.) will also help you achieve good results by speeding up your recovery and preventing damage to the incisions or the implants.
