The Profractional laser is a new advancement in laser technology manufactured by one of the leaders in the field, Sciton. The ProFractional laser is an erbium:YAG laser that treats a “fraction” of the skin by creating thousands of micro-channels into the tissue, deep below the epidermis, which promotes your skin to produce collagen. Collagen is responsible for the plump, youthful appearance of the skin. The stimulation of new collagen will smooth out fine lines, wrinkles, scars and other irregularities. The untreated surrounding tissue promotes rapid healing and decreases the length of downtime.

Before & After
What to Expect During a Profractional Laser Treatment?
Before the start of your Profractional laser treatment at NOVA Plastic Surgery in Northern Virginia, we will apply a topical numbing cream for 20 minutes to the treatment area to improve your comfort. The treatment itself takes about 20 minutes to complete. During the procedure you will wear protective eye shields and hear a series of snapping sounds as the laser is used. Most patients describe a sensation of heat and feeling as if small pebbles are hitting the skin surface followed by the feeling of a sunburn. At NOVA Plastic Surgery, we also use a Zimmer Chiller which directs cool air towards the area being treated to decrease discomfort. Following the treatment, cool compresses and a soothing ointment such as Skinceuticals HydraBalm are applied to the skin. We often combine MicroLaser Peel and/or BBL with Profractional laser treatment depending on your aesthetic concerns and goals.
What to Expect After a ProFractional Laser Treatment?
This discomfort can be easily relieved with cool compresses and Tylenol. Short term pinpoint bleeding will occur depending on the depth of your treatment. This mild bleeding typically resolves within an hour of the treatment. Because ProFractional treats a fraction of the skin’s surface, healing time is very quick with little downtime. Most patients feel comfortable to return to normal activities and apply light makeup within 3-4 days, depending on the depth of the treatment.

What Aftercare Can I Expect?
We will recommend a series of cleanses with a gentle cleanser along with application of a soothing balm for the first 1-3 days. Your skin will be more vulnerable to the rays of the sun so we recommend avoidance of the sun until you are fully healed. It is also recommended that you always use a zinc based sunscreen daily to avoid sun damage and premature aging of the skin.
How Soon Will I See Results?
Dramatic results can be achieved after just one ProFractional treatment.
Your skin will look smoother, tighter and fresher in just a few days after it has healed. You will continue to see improvements in your skin over the next 4-6 months as your collagen remodeling and production increases. The number of treatments needed to achieve optimal results will vary with each patient and depend on your treatment goals. It is recommended to wait 4-8 weeks between treatments. At Nova Plastic Surgery in Northern Virginia, we can personalize a treatment plan specifically for you and your needs!
You may not be a good candidate for ProFractional laser treatment if:
- You are pregnant
- Have active cold sores or a skin infection in the area to be treated (if you have history of cold sore/herpes outbreaks, we will prescribe you a pre-treatment oral medication to reduce the risk of an outbreak instigated by the heat of the laser)
- You are taking medications that may cause sensitivity to light
- Have a history of seizures
- You are taking blood thinners
