Laser resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure involving the use of laser heat to remove damaged skin to reveal younger-looking skin underneath, and to stimulate the growth of collagen in order to give you firmer skin. Laser resurfacing can be used to treat anything from dull, uneven complexion issues to fine lines and wrinkles. The length and condition of your recovery depends on how large the treatment area is, and how deep the laser treatment is done, but here are a few universal tips for making the most of your recovery:
Clean the treatment area with water twice per day, or as directed by your surgeon. This prevents complications like infections, and will help prevent crusting from forming.
Coat the area with the moisturizer or ointment provided by your surgeon after the surgical dressings come off (and dont remove the dressings until youre directed to by your doctor). This will keep the area moist, preventing scabbing and keeping the newer skin healthy and hydrated.
Use an oil-free, green-based makeup to cover up any redness once your skin has healed and you have the go-ahead from your surgeon. Redness or pinkness can last up to six months, and the green in the makeup helps neutralize its appearance.
Never leave the house without wearing sunscreen. The new skin is very delicate, and too much sun exposure can damage it.
Keep your head elevated while you sleep for the first three weeks, and avoid bending over and lifting heavy objects. This will help keep any swelling down.
These tips will help keep your new skin as healthy as possible, and keep swelling to a minimum. You might also develop some bruising in the first week or two- that will subside on its own. You will need someone to drive you home from the procedure, and its a good idea to have someone to help you around the house for the first few days of your recovery. You cant lift anything or do strenuous work, so laundry and most housework is out of the question anyway!
